What Is An Engine Block?
An engine block is the key player of vehicles that run on internal combustion providing power for the vehicle. The engine block is known as a block because it is usually a solid cast of car part that houses the cylinders and their components inside a cool and lubricated crankcase. The engine block is an extremely strong and powerful because its failure results in the car’s failure. The car will not function unless the engine block is repaired or replaced.
The engine block is usually made from cast iron. However in the late 1990s, the engine blocks that were made of plastic and other materials were used in prototype cars with the aim to develop more efficient and light weight vehicles. A cast iron engine block can comprise of a substantial portion of the car’s weight, it typically requires several people to be removed and worked on safely.
From the outside, the engine block has a solid metal designed for sealing everything inside. Some inside channels and passages comprises of cooling jacket. They are designed to deliver water from the radiator to all the hot sections of the engine. This prevents overheating. Once the water is circulated in the engine, it returns back to the radiator and gets cooled by the fan and then is sent back through the engine.
The cylinders are the core of the engine block. The cylinders are capped by the cylinder head. The size and placement of the engine block is determined by the numbers of cylinders. Most cars have four to eight cylinders. Pistons are present in the cylinders which provide energy for the vehicle through a series of controlled explosions in the cylinders pushing the pistons out and moving the crankshaft of vehicle.
An oil pan is attached to the bottom of the engine block which seals the lubricating oil for the engine. The car’s oil must be occasionally changed; the oil pan is drained and refilled for removing the old oil which is impure for the engine.
The engine block collectively refers to the crankcase and all the components filling it including valves, seals and gaskets. As engine block is important for the functioning of the car, it must be regularly maintained for preventing damage to internal parts.
During normal operations, the engine block becomes very hot and caution must be taken before touching until it has cooled considerably. Some drivers and chefs have experimented with cooking foods like baked potatoes but it was not recommended because it can damage to the engine if the food gets dislodged.
