Changing Oil In Your Car

The motor oil is like the engine’s blood as it flows through the vehicle. It needs to be replaced regularly. It is extremely necessary not to overlook the engine’s oil requirements. The function of the engine depends on the right use of oil and this definitely includes changing the oil in the car and one must know how to do it. One invests a lot of capital in the car and with the proper oil care; it will properly work for many years to come. Here are the steps explaining how to change oil in the car.

Step 1
One has to be completely ready for the oil change. All of the required things have to be present that are needed for oil change and they should be within easy reach. The car has to be parked on a leveled surface that would help the car to allow the oil to drain properly. The parking brake should also be pulled. The car must never be parked on a ramp or on jacks, unless one is unable to easily access the oil pan.

Step 2

The old oil has to be removed. The oil drain plug can be found under the car on its oil pan. A large container has to be set having a size of at least six inch mouth for catching all the oil below the plug. The drain plug can be loosened in a counter clockwise motion with a socket wrench and then unscrewed completely by hand. The oil will rush out once the plug has been removed and it should be drained completely from the car. When all of the oil has moved out, the drain plug has to be replaced.

Step 3
The old oil filter has to be thrown away. The oil filter can be removed using an oil filter wrench. The oil filter can be found under the hood. It looks like a long cylinder normally coated with rubber and has a size of soup’s can. For finding its exact location, the car manual can be referred. Once the filter is removed, a little oil using your finger can be used to coat the new oil filter gasket. This is for ensuring that the ring does not get stuck with the filter mount. The new oil filter can be tightened into place in the car by hand.

Step 4

The new oil can now be added in the car. Although not very important but it is better to add proper type of oil for the specific season. Better types of oils for winter for below zero temperatures are 0W30 and 5W30. 10W30 is better for summer because it is thicker in nature.

For adding oil, the oil filler cap has to be removed that is located on top of the engine and then a funnel can be used to add in the new oil. The oil filler cap can be placed back on when finished. The engine would now have to be warmed up and then the oil level of the car has to be checked. The manual explains exactly how much oil the car can hold, but oil must be never added as much as the car can take. It is important as some of the oil will be left in the engine. It is always better to put less oil in a car than putting too much.

Step 5
The old oil can be dropped off at a local garage or a hazardous waste center. A small amount might also have to be paid but it will be very small as compared to what the mechanic would have charged to change the car’s engine oil.
